Empowering Change Through STEM & Self-Care
By: Niouma Semega
Through SemegaChange, I’ve led initiatives such as the Ghana EmpowerHer Program, providing full scholarships for young girls to attend private schools, and the Nigeria STEM Mentorship Program, which connects students with industry professionals. I also work on environmental health research, focusing on disparities in EPA monitoring and the health impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations. These projects drive me because they directly impact communities that are often overlooked.
While I love the work I do, I also recognize that constant advocacy and leadership can be mentally and emotionally demanding. Over time, I’ve learned that taking care of myself is just as important as taking care of my mission. To maintain balance, I prioritize intentional self-care, whether that’s cooking, crocheting, playing sports, or simply watching reality TV as a mental reset. I also carve out time to be in nature, which helps me reflect and recharge. Burnout is real, and I’ve learned that rest is not a reward, it’s a necessity!
Another essential part of my mental well-being is building a strong support system. Surrounding myself with people who understand the weight of advocacy work, my family, friends, mentors, and my incredible team keeps me grounded. I also lean on prayer as it brings me peace and pushes me towards my purpose while being grateful for everything I encompass and have the opportunity to do.
At the heart of it all, I do this work because I believe that STEM should be accessible to everyone, not just those with privilege or resources. My goal is to continue breaking barriers, but also to lead by example, showing that success and wellness can coexist.
If there’s one thing I’d tell anyone pursuing a mission-driven career, it’s this: Your work is important, but so are you. Protect your peace, celebrate your wins, and never feel guilty for taking a break.
Let’s keep building, uplifting, and creating impact together.
